In partnership with WWF we started a 3 year project in 2008, supported by a 50% grant under the PSOM program by the Dutch government, called the Sustainable Tuna project. This project aims to advance more sustainable managed tuna long line fisheries in Vietnam.
WWF aims to ensure that tuna fisheries are ecologically healthy and selective, leading to more sustainable exploitation and long-term economic benefits. Considerable common interest of Culimer and WWF has resulted in this collaboration on tuna management.
Part of the Tuna Sustainability Project is the introduction of circle hooks. A type of hook that has been shown to reduce by-catch of marine turtles by as much as 80%, compared to traditional “J” hooks.
